The Respect for Marriage Act

House Resolution 8404, which is also known as the Respect for Marriage Act, would redefine marriage in American law, harming the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman.  If adopted, H.R. 8404 would:

• require the federal government to recognize any type of marriage recognized by a state
• arm the federal government with the power to persecute institutions that uphold the value of marriage between a man and a woman
• open Christians up to lawsuits at the federal level
• harm Christian-owned businesses and institutions, placing tax-exemptions statuses at risk

According to the Family Research Council, apart from jeopardizing religious liberty, the Respect for Marriage Act would produce long-lasting harmful consequences, such as:

• eroding the understanding that biological parents are essential to the development of children
• opening the door to federal recognition of polygamous relationships
  
• destroying the bedrock of society
